Why SPF Matters Year-Round (Especially in Summer)

Sun protection is the single most important step in any skincare routine. Yet during summer, when we spend more time outdoors, it's easier to forget or apply incorrectly.

Good SPF habits also protect the results of professional treatments. If you are investing in facials, microdermabrasion, nanoinfusion or microneedling, daily sun protection helps maintain the progress you make.

Understanding SPF

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects skin from UVB rays, the primary cause of sunburn. But SPF doesn't tell the whole story.

Broad Spectrum protection means the product guards against both UVA and UVB rays:

  • UVB rays cause sunburn
  • UVA rays penetrate deeper, causing premature ageing and contributing to skin cancer

For day-to-day use, choose a broad-spectrum SPF that feels comfortable enough to wear every morning. The best SPF is the one you will actually apply properly.

Summer SPF Tips

Apply Generously Most people apply only 25-50% of the recommended amount. For full body coverage, use about one shot glass worth of sunscreen.

Reapply Every Two Hours Sunscreen breaks down over time, especially in heat and sweat. Set a reminder to reapply every two hours when outdoors.

Don't Forget These Areas

  • Ears
  • Back of neck
  • Tops of feet
  • Scalp/hairline
  • Behind knees

Apply before makeup SPF should sit as the final step of your morning skincare routine before makeup. Let it settle before applying foundation or tinted moisturiser.

Do not rely on makeup alone Some makeup products contain SPF, but most people do not apply enough makeup to get the protection stated on the label. Use a dedicated sunscreen first.

Choosing the Right SPF

For daily use, SPF 30 is generally sufficient. If you're spending extended time outdoors, especially near water, opt for SPF 50 or higher and ensure it's water-resistant.

If your skin is sensitive, acne-prone or prone to pigmentation, ask for advice before choosing a formula. The wrong texture can feel greasy, sting the eyes or make you less likely to use it daily.

After-Sun Care

Even with diligent protection, some sun exposure is inevitable in summer. After a day in the sun, soothe your skin with:

  • A hydrating after-sun product
  • Cool showers
  • Aloe vera
  • Professional facial treatments to repair and refresh skin

Avoid strong exfoliants or retinoids if your skin feels hot, tight or irritated after sun exposure. Give the barrier time to calm before restarting active products.

Summer Treatments to Consider

For summer, many clients prefer treatments that support hydration and glow without heavy downtime. A Classic Facial can help refresh the skin, while nanoinfusion is useful when the skin looks dehydrated or dull.

If you are considering microdermabrasion or microneedling, SPF discipline becomes even more important. Delia will advise what to avoid before and after your appointment.
